The lads were a bit sheepish after being found guilty of monkey business on the school mini-bus from their trip to BBC.  Oh no, I cry, when I learn Mrs Leach is off to kill. Later she discovers the truth of the matter, vinyl got itself picked off the back seat.  All were called to account and the lads stepped up and took responsibility, even the one sleeping on the front seat. Great, I thought, teamwork. Punishment is being given, she confirmed.  I mentioned I would blog it.  I also said I had read from the blog pages to the Swindon's Writers Cafe and folk found the story of the Quest 1 trip to the vets with an overstuffed nicotine ridden rabbit rather entertaining.  As we sat outside, around a rather smokey fire pit, a nice writerly chap stepped forward and offered me a new character.  You've reminded me, he said, we have an old vintage cymbol playing monkey that you could take into school, use it as the enforcer - I'll write a poem to go with it. Oh dear, said Mrs L, la
I know it is all about choice, but do you have to go into the real world to become somebody! The idea of the project was to engage a group of young boy students (13 yr olds) in an contemporary arts project, offering out of lesson experiences inspired by a collection of iconic objects (toys), and involving a organic creative process of exploration.  Events have been student-led, the artist, supported by teacher's assistant Bev Jessop, have been exploring ways to unearth thinking outside the box.  13 lads have had fun with a modern art approach to discovering leadership skills, creative thinking, teambuilding, developing confidence in sharing individual and collective creative skills and talents.  The results have been about imaginative storytelling.   The group was divided into two, Quest 1, choosing to take a Rabbit and Clown on a journey, whilst the other half of the group, Quest 2, decided to become black sheep and explore the ancient rural landscape of Westbury White Horse.
Do you think it is all a bit insane? asked the artist, when reflecting on how it all came about to a very nice national innovation award fund manager called Gerry.  Should the project have been more sensible was the question?  Oh, no, was the reply, that would ruin it!  Hmm, he said, it is very much about independent learning, but, lads... what exactly have you learnt? Quest 2, thinking of time out in the ancient landscape of Westbury said gaily... Well, we have learnt how to be really good sheep, as they scribbled out some sums in their journals of how to share between them the £1,000 awarded to tell the world about their tales. Meanwhile, it was discussed how Quest 1 really did well at engaging folk from the community of Westbury, getting people involved in everyday routines to play. In the fast and furious process of engaging in art, life and possibilities, we used all sorts of art making stuff, performance, community involvement, participative video (p.v. - very c
It  felt really cool to be interviewed on the radio. Well, how many fourteen year old boys get interviewed about a giant orange rabbit on the radio?  So, it was a new experience for me, and again it was really fun! http://www.swindon1055.com Daring to be be different George, Rabbit Minder
A day out is organised to visit Create Studios in Swindon.  The lads are driven up by Mrs Leach and Bev - the idea is work with Barry Andrews, Music Producer & Musician, the studios are part of the Wyvern Theatre, so the lads hope to get on stage and make a spontaneous short play.  Jill had also organised to take some of the Questarians over to do a radio broadcast at Swindon 105.5 fm, all between the hours of 10 - 3.00 pm.  It was time for fun and action, a race against the clock! Quest 1 worked brilliantly well as a team, producing edgy rap & a moving rock anthem - exploring the power of lyrics, music and mood, to tell a story, from dark to light.  They all bring something to the creative challenge, for instance, Charlie found his voice, drawing from his recent experience of visiting Glastonbury festival, "you've given birth" I cry, as they all slump in the chair at the end of the day, happy but exhausted. Andrew goes home to write a fantastic report of the days
Can you spot the odd one out? quest  |kwest| noun a long or arduous search for  something: Five sheepish looking characters are interviewed intensely about their experience.   What was the quest all about...was anything discovered?   Talk turns to feeling included/excluded or being part of a team. What was learnt/experienced? How could things be different? Subjects experienced along the way are confirmed as including:  Geography, English, Art, Drama, RE and PE.  Thank goodness noone mentioned first aid.  A 60 mile bike ride is recalled. Meanwhile, where is Rabbit & Clown?
Do you know how I can find my way to becoming real? Lots of folk have shown incredible goodwill in participating in this storytelling project.  So far, the process includes: Students idea - a journey of toy rabbit & clown to become real Artist idea - how about we invite & engage all those we meet along the way Artist documented with portrait photography & journal & blog Students documented action, portraits & events using digital photography / journaling / will add to this blog Ideas for creative responses discussed so far, making music for image slideshow, dig photo album, commentary archive, apps, music video, a play! Wanted - ways to bring it all together?

In evaluating it was agreed with artist, staff and students that the last phase of the project was madness.  There was not enough time to spend on bringing the ideas of the lads together.  A dozen students all doing different work on digital/mixed media was enough to test a saint's resolve.  It was ambitious to try and achieve so much in such a short period of time, but it was simply that the project generated so much creative output.  At this point of the project more support could have been used to achieve the student's goals, or less time previously on the experiences they were enjoying. The idea of an exhibition was voted by the lads of both groups and it was asked if the work could be shown in an art museum.  There was difficulties in uploading posts at school on the blog, because of firewalled systems, and ideally it would have created a more open free dialogue between staff, artist, students, parents and friends.  But, there was much excitement in the fact that th
